Design to last is the main concept for this project. Thinking of the products that have been creating trash to our environment was the first step that I began with, however; there are over million different kinds of products that leaving the footprint on our earth, it was tough to make a decision of which product I should improve the design. To make it easier, I decided to take another step, figuring what increase pollution in our world and I found out that the petroleum industry is one of the top industry that creates a negative impact because it is toxic to almost all forms of life. Even worse, most of our activities on this present society require the use of it. This is time to take an effort for reducing damage to our planet.

Gaining more information  by the process of observing users helped me to understand the vital reasons of camping, which was returning to simplicity. It might sound ordinary but it inspired me to research the foundation of making fire.

FIRST PHASE

Choosing two appropriate ideas and making mockups to see the possibility of devices and also the proportion.

SECOND PHASE
MOCKUPS

Developing the most proper design to have the size that users will comfortably hold in their hands and easily to keep it in their bags by considering the design to be compact as possible.

This design has 3 main sections; magnesium body, the room for starting a fire and container for tinder.

From the second phase, I found out that there was an empty space inside the magnesium body, therefore, I decided to use that space as a tinder container. This development perfectly support my design to be more compact and complete in one body.

MECHANISM

When you scrap the magnesium rod with the blade, the blade will shave off thin pieces from a soft magnesium bar into tiny pieces. This friction will create a spark and it will continuously ignite a flame on tinder inside the tube.

Magnesium is a highly flammable metal, especially when powdered or shaved into thin strips; (it is, however, difficult to ignite in mass or bulk). Flame temperatures of magnesium and magnesium alloys can reach 3,100 °C (5,610 °F)

THIRD PHASE
MOCKUPS

Focusing more on the process of getting tinder from trees. I have tried many diferent kind of blades to study the angle and gap that will not only scrape the trees but also force the tinder to collect inside the tube.

FORTH PHASE
MOCKUPS

Due to the uncomfortable ergonomics of scraping the trees of the third phase mockups, I improved the design by changing blade position and find the way to cover the sharp knife that could be dangerous to users.
